Follow The Yellow Brick Road: From Novel, To Musical, And Onwards…
The creation of Wicked begins with L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which introduced the magical land of Oz and its beloved characters. The story was eventually immortalized in the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland, a cinematic classic known for its iconic performances, music, and Technicolor brilliance.
In 1995, Gregory Maguire reimagined the world of Oz with his novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. His dark, complex tale delved into the backstory of Elphaba, offering a fresh perspective on the nature of good and evil.
In 2003, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman adapted Maguire's novel into the Broadway musical Wicked. With its soaring score and heartfelt exploration of friendship, prejudice, and power, the show quickly became a global sensation, enchanting audiences around the world.
The journey has now come full circle with the highly successful, two-part film adaptation of Wicked. Bringing the magic of Oz to the big screen once again, the movies reimagine the beloved musical for a new generation, celebrating the enduring legacy of this iconic story.
