What Is Mamma Mia! The Musical About?

On the sun-kissed Greek island of Kalokairi, 20-year-old Sophie is preparing for the wedding of her dreams. There's just one problem: she doesn’t know who her father is. After secretly reading her mother Donna's old diaries, Sophie discovers three former lovers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. Determined to have her father walk her down the aisle, she invites all three men to the wedding without telling Donna.

As the unexpected guests arrive, chaos, comedy, and heartfelt confessions follow. Old flames reignite, secrets unravel, and the past looks to be repeating itself… With her loyal friends by her side, Donna is forced to confront her past while Sophie must decide what family really means.

The Music Of ABBA And Mamma Mia! The Musical

Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of ABBA, a Swedish pop/dance group with iconic hits like ‘Waterloo’, ‘Money, Money, Money’ & ‘Dancing Queen’. Producer Judy Craymer met songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus in 1983 when they were working with Tim Rice on Chess. It was the song **‘The Winner Takes It All’ that suggested to her the theatrical potential of ABBA’s songs. It took Craymer over 10 years to persuade Andersson and Ulvaeus to create the musical, but it finally opened in the West End in April 1999. The show has been playing in London ever since, celebrating its 10,000th performance in July 2024.

The show also crossed the pond to Broadway, playing from Oct 2001 to Sept 2015. Since then, Mamma Mia! has played in more than 60 countries on all 6 continents. It has been performed in over 440 major cities and has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide.

Mamma Mia! first had the silver screen treatment in 2008, featuring Hollywood stars such as Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, and Julie Walters. A sequel titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released in 2018 and tells the story of how Donna met each of the 3 men who are potentially Sophie’s father. The original film is the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time, with the sequel also becoming the highest-earning musical sequel in history.
