What Is Into The Woods About?
Into The Woods weaves together the stories of familiar fairytale characters, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and Rapunzel, into a clever and dark musical adventure.
When a Baker and his Wife are cursed by a Witch and must journey into the woods to break the spell, they encounter a world full of unexpected consequences and moral twists. As wishes are granted and dreams come true, the characters soon learn that every choice comes at a cost…
Stephen Sondheim’s Fairytale Masterpiece
Into The Woods was the second collaboration between Sondheim and Lapine after Sunday in the Park with George (1984). Into the Woods first debuted on Broadway in 1987, where it won three major Tony Awards (Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical for Joanna Gleason, who played The Baker’s Wife).

A Disney film adaptation directed by Rob Marshall was released in 2014. The movie starred Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine & Johnny Depp and resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Streep as The Witch.
